Join Three Gaits Therapeutic Horsemanship Center in Stoughton, WI, to grow the therapy program using your skills and the movement of the horse as a therapeutic tool to help clients reach their therapy goals.  

Three Gaits Inc. is a 40-year-old non-profit therapeutic horsemanship center that offers therapeutic riding lessons and occupational therapy with horses. A PATH, Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International) premier accredited center, certified therapeutic riding instructors, occupational therapy professionals, a dozen horses and hundreds of volunteers share the power and joy of horses with students who have a disability or special needs..   

Three Gaits is seeking to employ a board certified and licensed occupational therapist to provide therapy services and/or supervise a highly experienced COTA, on a team with PATH, Intl. certified therapeutic riding instructors and equine specialists. Together, the team preps and manages the horses while the therapist focuses on innovative, effective and fun therapy in 45-minute sessions.   

The position is planned for an average of 6 to 12 hours each week at the stables in Stoughton, allowing for client evaluation, treatment, charting and discharges. Persons with little experience with horses will be supported in horse management and handling by a PATH, Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor or Equine Specialist in Mental Health & Learning. 

Participation in occasional program planning, evaluation and promotion may be required. Scheduling is done cooperatively to match client, horse, equine specialist/riding instructor and therapist availability, with opportunities for weekday daytime or evening hour. Weekends may be considered.  

Three Gaits provides a therapy space and equipment, specially trained horses, an equine specialist or riding instructor to prepare and handle horses during treatment sessions; volunteers, client recruitment and billing. As an employee of Three Gaits, we provide professional insurance. Hourly salary ranges from $32 to $35 an hour based on experience and relevant qualifications. There are no additional benefits available at this time.  

Requirements: 

  • Current Wisconsin occupational therapy license and national (NBCOT) certification.  
  • Experience providing OT services to children and adults.  
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team.  
  • Access to transportation to the stables in Stoughton WI.  

Preferred: 

  • 1 – 2 years’ experience providing occupational therapy services to people with a disability.  
  • Horse experience in a recreational or professional capacity 
  • American Hippotherapy Association Level 1 or 2 certification and/or plans to pursue within 1 year of practice at Three Gaits. (AHA Level 1 may be offered at Three Gaits in 2023.)  
  • Certification or willingness to attain PATH, Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor or Equine Specialist in Mental Health & Learning certification.  
  • Volunteer or work experience supervising the work of others. 
  • Spanish speaking, writing and comprehension skills; knowledge of Hispanic/Latino culture.

Process: 

  • Round 1: Three Gaits screening committee will review applications and schedule a phone interview for qualified applicants.

  • Round 3: Two to three finalists will be invited for a second interview.
